Description
Newburn Pool (West Denton was in Newburn parish) was built by Newburn Urban District Council, costing £278,000. Opened in January 1970. Designed by John Poulson. This was Newcastle's first metric pool, built to the new standard length of 33.3m (just short of the previous norm of 110 feet). This is still the longest competition pool in Newcastle. Now called the Outer West Pool, a 25m training pool and fitness centre was added in 2009. The 1970s entrance has been removed to make way for the extension. It is home to Newburn Amateur Swimming Club which originated as Arthur's Hill Club at the end of the 19th century.
