A "Shaft (Coal)" is shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey plan of the area. This is presumably Heavywell Pit of Garesfield Colliery (HER 3372). Opened by the Marquis of Bute, later Consett Iron Company Ltd, and from 1947 the National Coal Board.
