Description
Public House built between 1858-1876 on the west side of Frederick Street. Constructed as part of the mid-late 19th century urbanisation of the area due to the towns growing workforce. In 1876 the pub was owned by Mr J Gibbons and in 1885 by Mr J Lillico. The building was recorded in 2010 by Archaeological Research Services. At the time of recording the buildings had many original features both internally and externally such as sash windows, tiles and fireplaces. The pub frontage was in a very good condition following the removal of late 20th century render. In 1989 the pub underwent a £60,000 refurbishment by Peter Clark Designs for the owners Tom and Calire Mein. During this phase of refurbishment many of the original features were uncovered and restored. Further recording of the building and the southern section of the street took place in 2013 by Tyne and Wear Museums Archaeology section prior to demolition.
