Description
St. Francis Church was built in 1953 by Stanley Miller Ltd to the design of W B Edwards’architectural practice. It is a small church paid for by the community and was subject to the strict restrictions imposed by building licenses in the post-war years, which limited the use of exposed concrete on the interior, plaster finishes, and also influenced the size of the building. The modest church is set within an area of grass and is a red brick construction with a round tower at the main entrance. The windows around the top of the tower have sandstone surrounds. The church building is a reflection of the increase in church-going after the war years. LOCAL LIST
