Description
Shown on the Thomas Bell's Survey of 1826 and the tithe plan of 1844 as a wagonway with sidings leading into Sheriff Hill Colliery (HER 3844) from the north-east. The Ordnance Survey first edition shows this route linking to the Team Colliery Wagonway (HER 3741). It was out-of-use once the colliery became disused before 1897. Earlier maps suggest that this route linked with the Bensham and Gateshead Fell Way (HER 5947) at the colliery. This early line was built before 1670, however. Alan Williams' suggests that the extension of High Heworth Way to Sheriff Hill colliery in 1805 follows this route.

Description
Sheriff Hill Colliery, also known as Ellison Main Colliery was founded in the 1780s. The "Plan of Collieries of Gateshead Fell" dated 1773, has a colliery marked "pit not sunk yet". The pits of Sheriff Hill Colliery were Ann, Bess, Centre, Dolly, Edge, Fanny, George, King, Bradley, Doll, Isabella, Kells, Stapple and Hope. Owners were Allhusen & Co: Sir A. Wood, Charlaw, Sacriston. Later owners were Lamb & Hutchinson, Gibson & Co, Charlton & Gibson and Forster. There were several disasters at the colliery - on 27th December 1793 14 people were killed, on 21st December 1794 there another explosion. On 27th June 1815 an explosion killed 11 people. A fire on 11th December 1815 killed 5 people and on 19th July 1819 there were 35 lives lost due to an explosion. Many of the victims of this latter disaster were buried at St. Mary's Churchyard in Gateshead. The layout of the colliery is shown on a plan by Thomas Bell of 1826. The Colliery closed by 1897. The colliery was served by the Bensham and Gateshed Fell Way which was built after 1670 (HER 5947).
SITEASS
A new school is being built on this site [2005]. An archaeological evaluation in June 2004 found no archaeological remains of the colliery or the associated wagonways, due to landscaping of the playing fields and former quarrying.

In 1862 the Hartley disaster instigated a law which compelled collieries to have at least two exits so extra shafts were dug at Sheriff Hill. The Colliery closed by 1897. The colliery was served by the Bensham and Gateshead Fell Way which was built after 1670 (HER 5947). There were two other associated pits - Fanny Pit (HER 3846) and Isabella Pit. Thomas Hair published a drawing and description of the colliery in 1844.

Description
A possible incline is shown on the 1st edition OS mapping as a track or path, with a building adjacent to it called Incline House. This makes up a short section of the High Heworth Way identified by Alan Williams. The waggonway was possibly in use by 1701, running from Blackett's Heworth Colliery to Heworth Shore. The line also carried grindstone roughed out in quarries in Heworth. A branch line led to the Grindstone Quay at the western end of Heworth Shore. The main line was extended by 1805 and carried coal from Sheriff Hill Colliery.
