Small lane that linked Dean Street to Pilgrim Street. According to tradition small boats could come this far up the Lort Burn until the dene was filled in. The mooring-rope of a small boat is called a 'painter'. John White had his printing house here in the 18th century. He founded Newcastle's first newspaper in 1711.
