Description
Mayson's survey of 1613 mentions 'Newburn Towle booth'. Gateshead town had a tollbooth from 1577 which acted as a market court and town gaol {Manders}. Court rolls of Newburn survive for 1761 to 1772 and these largely relate to minor incidents {Dodds}.
