Description
North Eastern Railway, Newton Garths Branch. This connected the North Eastern Railway, Pontop and South Shields Branch (HER ref. 2290) with the North Eastern Railway, Sunderland Branch (HER ref. 2289). This was originally the Brandling Junction Railway, Newton Garths goods branch (opened in 1839). It allowed coal from West Durham to reach Sunderland North Dock.
