Description
Built in 1867, a two storey octagonal watchtower tower and an 'infirmary' were added in 1875. South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade is one of the last of the many voluntary life brigades formed in the nineteenth century. The buildings are of timber cladding over a wooden frame in the most part. A further brick building is present. Some of the yellow wooden buildings are of the original build of 1867 following the formation of the brigade in 1866. The population of South Shields raised £800 for its construction. A crest of arms is above the main door proclaiming the brigade motto "Always Ready". LISTED GRADE 2
