The Ship Inn's landlord in 1878 was George Blair, described as 'an esteemed and jovial host… undoubtedly one of the most popular men on Tyneside… genial, good-natured and credited with an abundance of common sense'. George Blair was born in Allendale. He was a policeman, then a farmer, before becoming a publican. He rebuilt the pub as the Ship Hotel in 1901 and did catering for ships. Newcastle Breweries later took it over. It closed in 1962.

NB this was originally given a location of NZ292638, which is some way to the south and west of Fisher Street. GIS data placed it at the junction of Fisher Street, Oil Mill Road and Neptune Road. The Ship Inn is shown to the southeast of this on the OS 1859 1:2500 map, but had been demolished by the time of the OS 1907 1:500 plan. The above description is therefore likely to refer to another Ship Inn.
