Description
The North Walbottle Miners Welfare Institute was built in 1925 and is now the Westerhope Community Centre. The building is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1:1250 map of 1951 (sheet NZ1967NW - A).
This attractive single storey building faces east onto Hillhead Road and is constructed in red brick with stone window surrounds and a slate roof. The building was originally symmetrical with a grand central double entrance with a large pedimented stone arch surround, and a projecting bay on either side. The southern bay has been extended to the south and has a date stone above the western window reading 'AD 1925'.
