Eating and Drinking Establishment
SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. Built in 1892. An magazine advert from the 1890s boasted 'ales, wines and spirits of the finest quality, spacious assembly rooms, balls, dinners and dance parties, every convenience, luxuriously fitted-up buffet, smoke and billiard rooms'. Public houses came late to Heaton (Jesmond and Byker had pubs much earlier) because of agreements made with the original landowners. Also Temperence activists, churches and the Heaton Anti-licensing Council opposed the granting of licences 'on moral grounds'. In 1890 an appeal was made to the magistrates that Heaton had no public houses. So when permission was granted for the East End Hotel, it was significant. A further licence for Heaton was opposed in 1897 when the Heaton Anti-licencing Council said that 'with its fairy lights the public house would tempt those passing to turn aside from the path of rectitude' and that further licences would 'destroy the character Heaton had had in the past for moral perfection and purity'. In 1907 the name of the East End Hotel was changed to the Chillingham Hotel. In 1938 the pub was rebuilt. The new hotel was only licenced to sell alcohol on the ground floor (rather than three floors). It was a Tetley house. In 1991 Sir John Fitzgerald took it over and dropped the word 'hotel' from the name. The pub was renovated. The Chillingham still exists.
