Description
[This line has been given two HER numbers because a substantial part of its middle section is outside the County. The southern section is HER ref. 2994]. The North Eastern Railway, Durham and Sunderland Branch had its northern terminus at the South Dock Drops (HER ref. 2875) and the Town Moor Station (HER ref. 2878). The line was opened to Haswell in 1836 and extended to Shincliffe in 1839. It was taken over by the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway in 1846 and was still using rope haulage in 1858. The line was shortened to Pittington in 1931 and closed in 1953.

SITEDESC
The North Eastern Railway Durham and Sunderland Branch. Its northern terminus was at the South Dock Drops, (SMR 2875) and the Town Moor Station, (SMR 2878). This line has been recorded in two sections as a substantial part of its middle section is outside the County. The southern section is SMR 2994. Works started in 1835. The line was intended to be worked entirely by stationary engines, so it was laid out in a series of inclined planes varying in inclination from 1 in 60 to 1 in 264. A 14 mile stretch of line was opened to the newly opened Haswell Colliery and Belmont Colliery in 1836 and extended to Shincliffe in 1839. It was taken over by the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway in 1846 and was still using rope haulage in 1858. The line was shortened to Pittington in 1931 and closed in 1953.

Description
The Londonderry, Seaham and Sunderland Railway was opened in 1852 by the Marquis of Londonderry as the Seaham and Sunderland Railway. Designed for locomotives, it was a public railway carrying passengers and freight and remained independent until taken over in 1900 by the North Eastern Railway. It had stations at Hendon (HER ref. 2894) and Ryhope (HER ref. 2957), and left Tyne and Wear where it crosses the Ryhope Dean Viaduct (HER ref. 2959). At Hendon Beach (NZ 4105 5520) the line recently survived as a cutting to the south and a line of compacted coal waste in the north.
