Description
Shown on the 2nd edition OS mapping with an Aqueduct and two reservoirs. This was opened in c 1820. This had originally been a pumping shaft belonging to the Shiremoor Coal Company. The beam engine was erected in 1875. When the Backworth Company took over ownership in 1896 they deepened the shaft and converted it to coal working by building a horizontal steam winder. In 1927 mechanical mining began at the Maude, Eccles and Algernon pits, displacing pit ponies. Taken over by the National Coal Board in 1947, and closed in 1966.

Description
Site of the Backworth Colliery granary and feed preparation mill for pit pony fodder. The name "Allotment" came from the multitude of small holdings and farms, many of which came to be owned by the colliery company. The Allotment Mill became the focal point of produce from these farms. The granary was built between 1854 and 1898 probably utilizing stone from the old haulage engine when it was dismantled (HER 1143). The granary survived until at least the late 1960s.

Description
A Smithy appears on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey plan, but its precise location remains unclear.
SITEASS
The smithy or forge was the workplace of a blacksmith or ironsmith, where iron was worked into useful objects such as weapons, armour in the Middle Ages and locks, hinges, spades and tools, iron horseshoes (machine-made horseshoes were introduced from USA in 1870s), grilles, gates, railings, metal parts for locomotives, coaches, waggons and carts. The blacksmith's raw material was wrought iron in bar form. The smithy comprised a hearth, bellows, anvil and bosh (quenching trough). A small forge had hand-operated bellows, a large industrial forge water-powered bellows, power hammer and shears (William Jones, 1996, Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology).

Description
Abbey Shot Factory, on the site of the former Earsdon Colliery, Duke and Dutchess Pit, (HER 1111) and was served by the Backworth Colliery Railway, Church Pit Branch, (HER 2171). Opened during the 1890s. Lead shot is made by pouring molten lead through a sieve and letting it fall far enough so that the metal cools and forms into spheres which are caught in sand. There was no shot tower here, instead the old mine shafts were used. The works had their own sidings to supply coal to the melting furnaces and to take the finished product away. The works probably closed during the depression.
