School
SITEDESC
Shown on 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map. May have been on the site by 1873 but lack of map evidence. The 19th century school may be built on the site of an earlier school. Bulmer's Directory suggests the school was built in 1878 after it was decided that Dudley Colliery School was too small. A board school at Dudley is recorded in 1879 with Headmaster Thomas Simpson Hudson and mistresses Mary Lindsay Preacher and Annie Nichol. The school was a mixed school and could accomoodate 487 children. By 1910 the school could accommodate 700 children.By 1977 the school outbuildings to the west have been removed. The school is labelled on the 1977 map as 'First School'. In 1988 the school reopened as Dudley Peoples' Centre. The centre closed in 2008 and is due to be demolished for redevelopment. It was recorded in 2015. There were no features of historical or architectural interest within the building which appears to have been stripped during the 1980s refit.
