On Rain's Eye Plan on the Quay side. The 'Commonty' between the High Street and the river in Low Street was used for drying fish. Lawrence Leavebetter owned stone tanks there, used to keep mussels for fish bait. Excavations by Northern Archaeological Associates in 2004 at 172-180 High Street East recorded a stone structure, possibly a stone mussel tank. The land had once been owned by the Chantry of the Virgin Mary at Bishopwearmouth Church, but James I passed it into private ownership. Eventually George Lilburne built a large house on it. Fish was probably thereafter dried on the town moor.

The building of the north pier c. 1785 resulted in a bank of shingle and sand forming at the site of what would become the North Dock in 1837. The area was immediately utilised by the Williamsons for leasing out to ship builders and timber merchants. This is probably the area shown on the Eye Plan as a ship building yard.

A bottle glass factory is shown on the Eye Plan where salt pans had previously been located.

On Rain's Eye Plan. Barker suggests that Newbottle Pottery was founded c.1720 and was known as "High Newbottle", in Pottery Yard behind Dial House. It closed down in 1878. Broken kilns were seen in 1890but it has since been built over.

Block making was an industry associated with shipbuilding. Reay's Block Yard is shown on Rain's Eye Plan on the riverside next to "raff" and ship building yards.

A sail cloth factory is shown between Queen's Street and Green Street on Rain's Eye Plan.

Owned by Joseph Price of the Durham Glass Works (HER 3486). Here he manufactured patent plate glass.

Cookson and Button had an iron founding premise at Pipewellgate in 1760.

There is a record of iron founding houses at the east end of Old Trunk Staith, location not known, leased by Cotesworth to Cookson and Button. The concern prospered and a steel furnace warehouse was added.
