J&W Wilson (John and William - brothers) Timber Yard, on the east side of Wearmouth Bridge. Destroyed by fire in December 1878. It was reopened and by 1890 covered two acres of ground. It was again destroyed by fire in March 1890. The damage was estimated at £18,000-£20,000. The timber yard was rebuilt after the fire and continued in use until the 1950s. By 1899 the business also had a small premises (perhaps a sawmill) on Newcastle Road. The family were deeply involved in other Sunderland activities - William Wilson was mayor of Sunderland twice, in 1881 and 1882 and Samuel Wilson was Chairman of Sunderland Football Club in the 1920s.

Description
Named as Stafford Abbs Brewery on Raine's plan of the 1790s where a figure is depicted loading a barrel onto a boat with a crane or joist. The colliers were supplied by water boats which carried the casks open at the top. They were filled from the brewery pump and the ships were loaded using buckets. The 1792 'Plan of Harbour' by JA Mackintosh also shows the brewery premises as 'Brewery and Premises of the late John Stafford Esq'. It is a single building, two stories high built close to the water’s edge. The crane structure can be seen at the front of the building. A brewery is also shown on Robson's map of 1817 and Robson's map of 1850 names the lower stretch of Bonner's Field as 'Brewery Bank'. The first edition Ordnance Survey map divides the brewery into two malt houses, a brew house, maltkiln, bonded store and office. A brewery building remains on the site, in recent times used as a public house and restaurant, but this was built in the 1930s as a Mineral Water Factory adjoining the much older Monkwearmouth Brewery complex.

It retains this layout on the 1898 OS map. There has been a brewery on the original Stafford site until modern times. The original building has been demolished. A brewery building does remain on the site, in recent times used as a public house and restaurant, but this was built in the 1930s as a Mineral Water Factory adjoining the much older Monkwearmouth Brewery complex.

Description
The Manor Quay was an extension of J L Thompson's North Sands Yard (HER ref. 2722). It was opened in 1884 for the fitting out and repair of vessels. The history of the manor Quay is, as such, parallel with the rest of J L Thompson's Yard. Joseph L Thompson and Sons Ltd was incorporated as a limited liability company in 1894. In 1954 the company became a subsidiary concern for Sunderland Shipbuilding, Dry Docks and Engineering Co. Ltd, which itself became part of the Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in 1961. In 1966, Thompson's was absorbed into Doxfords. On the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey plan, the yard is marked as 'Ship Repairing Works' on the riverside west of ballast House Wharf, and two substantial structures exist within it. There is little change shown on the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey plan but on the 4th edition buildings have enclosed the eastern and north-eastern sides of the yard, travelling cranes run alongside the quayside to the east and west, and a large fixed crane sits towards the west of the quay. The yard was demolished in 1986 and little trace of it survives.

In 1966, Thompson's was absorbed into Doxfords. On the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map, Manor Quay is not constructed. The area is in residential use, with a row of housing to the south of Wear Street. A gridiron, for graving ships, lies on the riverside beyond the housing, suggesting that some limited ship repair work was already taking place. On the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map, the yard is marked as 'Ship Repairing Works' on the riverside west of ballast House Wharf. Palmers Hill Engine Works lies on an adjacent site to the north-west. Two substantial structures exist within the Manor Quay. Little change on the OS third edition except a few additional small structures in the centre of the yard. On the OS fourth edition map buildings have enclosed the eastern and north-eastern sides of the yard. Travelling cranes run alongside the quayside to the east and west. A large fixed crane sits towards the west of the quay {3}.

Description
Historic Ordnance Survey map evidence shows a Smithy on this site.
SITEASS
The smithy or forge was the workplace of a blacksmith or ironsmith, where iron was worked into useful objects such as weapons, armour in the Middle Ages and locks, hinges, spades and tools, iron horseshoes (machine-made horseshoes were introduced from USA in 1870s), grilles, gates, railings, metal parts for locomotives, coaches, waggons and carts. The blacksmith's raw material was wrought iron in bar form. The smithy comprised a hearth, bellows, anvil and bosh (quenching trough). A small forge had hand-operated bellows, a large industrial forge water-powered bellows, power hammer and shears (William Jones, 1996, Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology).
