In 1806 the Fountain, of Sunderland, ran aground near her home port. All the crew were lost {Keys and Smith}. Other sources record the wreck as occurring in 1815 - presumably it is the same ship? 1815 wreck of English brig which stranded at Hendon opposite the Blue House, while en route from Shoreham-by-Sea to Sunderland. Laden with oak timber and planks, she was a wooden sailing vessel. All 5 crew were washed overboard to their deaths apart from a boy who was found drowned in the cabin. Master: Corner

Description
The BARQUE Salween was driven ashore south of the South Pier in November 1895. She was built in Burma of teak and named after a Burmese river. In 1895 she was registered in Norway. The ship was being towed into the River Tyne by a steam tug in a storm when the tow rope broke and she drifted into the end of the South Pier. The ship was carried south of the pier and driven on to the beach. The crew were rescued by breeches buoy. Built: 1851

Description
In December 1870 the north-east coast was hit by severe weather. On 8th December there was a gale from the south-east which brought heavy rain and created huge waves. On the afternoon of 9th December in force 10 winds blowing from east-south-east, the schooner SAMUEL BERNARD was wrecked on rocks at Tynemouth. The ship was registered in Boston, Lincolnshire and the master was John Thrush. His wife and five children had also been on board and they were all lost. The ship had been spotted near The Bar flying signals of distress at dusk. She almost made it into the harbour but a tremendous wave struck her and rolled her onto her beam ends and she sank. The body of a 14 year old boy lashed to a spar soon drifting onto the shore, along with a child's severed foot. The ship's official log was retrieved which confirmed the identity of the vessel. Master: John Frash, Crew: 4 (all lost). Passenger: At least 2 (all lost)
