SITEDESC
1785 wreck of English craft which stranded on Hendon Rock while bound for Newcastle upon Tyne; a wooden sailing vessel. `Newcastle, Nov. 5, 1785...Yesterday se'nnight, about 7 at night, the FANNY, Capt. David Smith, jun., belonging to this port, making for the harbour, and standing close in shore, was, by the changing of the wind from SW to ENE with a sudden squall, driven upon Hendon Rock, near Suter [sic] Point, and sunk in 5 minutes; the crew with difficulty saved themselves, by climbing upon the rocks; but, from the darkness of the night, two of them fell over a precipice, one of whom was killed on the spot, the other had his thigh bone broke, and was otherwise much bruised, but is now in a fair way of recovery; the ship is since gone to pieces, and the seaman who was killed, has left a widow and three children to lament his loss.' {Newcastle Courant 05-NOV-1785, No.5691 Page 4}.
