Description
This cinema opened in July 1913 and was a converted chapel able to seat c. 300. It was Sunderlands smallest cinema and was owned by James Noble, a fairground attraction owner. After his death in 1924 the cinema closed; it later became the premises for the National Assistance Board (later Social Security) now demolished.

It became the premises for the Social Security board and although the interior is gone the exterior remains. A site visit though suggests the area is now entirely residential with no trace of the Gem cinema.

The Wheatsheaf Hall at the bottom of Southwick Road and the corner of the Wheatsheaf was taken over by Lough and Richardson in 1906. A year later James Tindle took it over and renamed it the Wheatsheaf Picture Hall it was renamed later as the Coronation Picture Palace after the Coronation of George V and after 1913 became known as the Cora. James Tindle's son, James Jnr inherited it from his father. When James Jnr died his widow Margaret continued to run the cinema. The cinema closed in 1959 and the building demolished in 1982 to make way for road improvements.

The Monkwearmouth Picture Hall was opened on the 14th May 1906 in Bonnersfield Monkwearmouth. The building had been St Stephen's Chapel and then it housed a waxworks exhibition. The Monkwearmouth Picture Hall was renamed the Bridge Cinema in 1916 and renamed three years later as the Bromarsh when it was taken over by the Marshall Brothers. The cinema was bombed on the 24th May 1943. The site was destroyed by bombs in WWII and has since been built on.

Opened on the 30th October 1882 as a theatre showing plays and live music hall acts. During 1907 and 1908 James H Tindle showed the theatres first moving pictures. The theatre only lasted a few years after the introduction of the "talkie" films and was closed on the 27th February 1932. The grand entrance way had a square frontage with a stepped pyramid topping. The theatre was closed in 1932 and the land bought by Vaux Brewery who retained the original entrance and incorporated it into their new building. The brewery was demolished in 1999. Tesco bought the land in 2001 but in 2010 it was sold to One North East for redevelopment. It is currently a brown-field redevelopment site with plans for mixed-use office and residential quarter with additional leisure facilities and new hotels.

Two George II halfpennies. They were found on the site of the new Scotswood bridge during the demolition of the one one. They are the size of a modern penny and date to 1799. The obverse reads GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA REX. It is unusual to find REX after the full form of DEI GRATIA. The only other example of this inscription in Brooke's 'English Coins' is on a Bank of England five shilling dollar of 1804. The reverse is badly worn but Britannia is shown seated left, with an oval-shaped shield at her left side and the waves beneath. At her feet is a ship. This and the five shilling dollar in Brooke's book must represent the issue struck in 1799 at the Soho Mint in Birmingham.
