It has an attractive formal air with neat flower beds, planters, ornamental tree planting, undulating grass (remnants of ridge and furrow earthworks) and meandering tarmac footpaths. A children's play area, bowling green, tennis court, timber and cast iron benches. The west boundary is a dry stone wall and green railings. The south and east boundaries are a mix of fencing, railings and mature trees.

Description
In 1862 Whitburn Cricket Club was established on land formerly part of Whitburn Hall's grounds. The limestone wall on the east boundary rises from 2m to almost 4m in height. Previously ridge and furrow fields, the land was given by Sir Hedworth Williamson, then captain of the club. The pavilion is a modern flat-roofed brick and timber building. The ground is bounded by sycamore trees along the east, west and south sides.

The ground is bounded by sycamore trees along the east, west and south sides. The present pavilion was designed by William Kirtley of SW Milburn & Partners of Sunderland. It was opened in 1961-62 during the centenary of the club. Whitburn is Tyne and Wear's third oldest sports ground (after Whickham and Percy Main cricket clubs).

In 1822 in a period of exceptionally low tides, the remains of an ancient forest were uncovered in Whitburn Bay. English Heritage's Intertidal and Coastal Peat Database - submerged peat and forest deposit extending for 2/3 of a mile (c. 0.5km). In places it's over 6' (1.83m) thick. Contains fragments of birch bark, hazel nuts and charcoal. Also contains red deer antler. Observed at low tide. Only exceptionally seen. Referred to in Trechmann 1832 and Woolacott 1897
