The Jewish section of Elswick Cemetery is of high cultural value and history. It includes a mixture of Jewish gravestones with Hebrew inscriptions in sandstone and polished granite. This Jewish plot is one of the earliest in the country dating from the opening of a public cemetery (1857). The walled plot was sold to the Jewish community for £500. For some reason it is omitted from the Registered Parks & Gardens Designation. The cemetery was designed by John Johnstone who also designed the Leazes Park Synagogue (HER 8932). The Jewish plot includes over 1000 graves. The oldest are close to the gate on St. John's Road. The ohel of 1874 has gone.

Description
Bentinck Crescent is a gracefully curving Victorian terrace of brick and stone. Its distinctive style is a reminder of the former housing which once characterised this part of the city. Parts of the crescent have been converted to be used as shops, however some of the crescent retains its original features and appearance. The houses preserve the original door and column lintel designs and the unrendered houses still maintain the contrast between the red brick walls and the painted sandstone lintels over the windows. Description
St. Francis Church was built in 1953 by Stanley Miller Ltd to the design of W B Edwards’architectural practice. It is a small church paid for by the community and was subject to the strict restrictions imposed by building licenses in the post-war years, which limited the use of exposed concrete on the interior, plaster finishes, and also influenced the size of the building. The modest church is set within an area of grass and is a red brick construction with a round tower at the main entrance. The windows around the top of the tower have sandstone surrounds. The church building is a reflection of the increase in church-going after the war years. LOCAL LIST
