windows except for central window of 3 lights. Top floor has gable over 3 left
bays with tall, paired 2-light windows under roundel with carved ornament;
crocketed gable moulding on curved kneelers has clove finial. Bays to right
have nook shafts to alternately cusped and segmental-headed windows, that over
entrance projecting slightly. Corbel table above these bays supports balustrade
and gabled dormers in alternate bays; moulded kneelers and clove finials.

In 2013 No. 53 is Mark Toney's Café, No. 55 is Marie Curie's Charity Shop, No. 59 is Forbidden Planet, No. 61 is Cancer Research's shop, office's above. Above No 53 was a Freemasons Hall. This opened in 1870 for he Lodge de Loraine no 541. Later it became the meeting place for other local masonic lodges and the HQ of the Northumberland province of the freemasons. The masons moved out in 1976. The interior of the hall has since been partitioned for office accommodation. The exterior carries the insignia of English freemasonry and its motto.

Description
Lodge, gateway, walls and gates. 1836 by John Dobson for Newcastle General
Cemetery Company. Sandstone ashlar; roof of small graduated slates. Classical
style. One storey, one bay. Central blocked tripartite window under pedimented
gable on four pilasters to Gateway has 2-stage towers with raised stone surrounds
to square-headed pedestrian entrances under cornice and chamfered coping.
Pediment shaped upper sections have antefixae and acroterion. High, flat coped
walls enclose area in front and break forward to square piers with sloped coping.
Cast iron vehicle and pedestrian gates have spear-finialled standards and dog-
bars and acanthus ornament to principals. LISTED GRADE 2*

Monument on the English Heritage Register of Buildings at Risk 2007, priority C - slow decay; no solution agreed. Heritage At Risk 2008, priority C, condition poor. The building has been stabilised and secured. Listed on English Heritage's Heritage At Risk Register 2009. Condition: very bad. Priority: B (immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric, solution agreed but not yet implemented). The building suffered a significant structural collapse during bad weather in autumn 2008. English Heritage offered a grant in January 2009 towards urgent repairs that will be carried out during 2009/10. No longer on Heritage At Risk register.
