Institute
SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey first edition of 1856. Demolished for the A690 in the 1970s. Mechanics Institutes were buildings where artisans could learn more about their craft and the science behind it. They could use the reading room and attend lectures. Such institutues were set up to take up the ideas of Jeremy Bentham, politician and reformer (1723-90). London's Mechanic Institute was founded in 1824 by George Birkbeck. By 1844 there were 200 institutues in Britain with 50,000 members. By the 1850s however the institutes were mostly attended by clerks and shopkeepers and the artisan interest declined. Nevertheless mechanics institutes can be regarded as the forerunner of modern professional engineering bodies {Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology}.

Description
A pinch-point marked by trees. A curved two-storey terrace. However most properties have been rendered, pebbledashed or painted in a variety of colours. The terrace was built incrementally with varying details (not all have bay windows). Some chimneys have been reduced. Few original windows or doors survive (those to No. 2 appear original). Hedges have replaced lost railings. The first few houses are slightly earlier and have round arched windows with stone drip moulds. No. 2 is probably the most intact even though it is rendered. No. 9 is the only house to have retained its brick façade, but it has uPVC windows. There are extensions to the rear in brick and stone. Long gardens stretch back to tall walls, garages and outbuildings. The back lane has cobbles beneath the tarmac.

Description
Three quite grand red brick terraced houses. Detailing similar to Station Road. Deep front gardens, two-storey bay windows and decorative porches. Original joinery survives as well as unpainted stone detailing which is rare in the CA. Shield Hurst's side elevation was built ready for the next house which was never built. The group is surrounded by a pocket of undeveloped land with naturalised scrub and copious trees.
