Description
Boats had been sailed on the lake as early as the 1880s. Heaton & District Model Power Boat Club was formally inaugurated in 1910. Their scale models were mostly naval craft. The boathouse was built in 1923. Straight running competitions between a course marked by flags are still held. The catcher stands in the water and collects the boat before it rams the pond wall.

Description
Founded in 1893. The boathouse still survives. It cost £102 12s. It was doubled in size in the 1930s. In the late C19, tinplate boats were made in German factories. In the first half of the 20th century, British-made boats became popular (Meccano of Liverpool and Bassett-Lowke of Northampton). Some model boats were powered by petrol engines or steam, clockwork or twisted rubber bands. The direction of the boat was controlled by setting the rudder or the sails. Radio control was introduced in the 1950s. Each boat operator is allocated a specific radio frequency, marked up on a pegboard in the clubhouse. Cheap plastic from the 1970s has made model boating more affordable. As well as lockers for members' models and kit, the model boathouse has a worktable for repairs and pre-race adjustments.

Description
Formed in 1882. Its 1894 boathouse survives in the park, but the club ceased to function in 2007. Weed and silt in the pond prevented sailing. At the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition there was a 'straight running' competition. Powered model boats were set off, one at a time, towards a target, gaining points for accuracy. The introduction of radio control allowed the boats to be navigated around a series of hazards.

Description
South Shields Model Yacht Club was formed by local aldermen in 1886 at the newly created South Marine Park. It claims to be the oldest such club in the north east. The club may have gone into abeyance during the two world wars. Nowadays the boats are navigated using radio transmitters around a course defined by buoys. Each yacht is controlled using two separate radio channels on a single frequency. One battery-powered motor operates the rudder, another a winch which adjusts the sails. The rules of model yacht racing are the same as for full sized boats. They are governed by the Model Yacht Association.
