Duxfields Foundry (Iron).

Shown on Raine's plan of the 1790s as Stafford Abbs Brewery with a man is loading a barrel onto a boat with a crane or joist. The colliers were supplied by water boats which carried the casks open at the top. They were filled from the brewery pump and the ships were loaded using buckets. The 1792 'Plan of Harbour' by JA Mackintosh also shows the brewery premises as 'Brewery and Premises of the late John Stafford Esq'. It is a single building, two stories high built close to the waters edge. The crane structure can be seen at the front of the building. A brewery is also shown on Robson's map of 1817. Robson's map of 1850 names the lower stretch of Bonner's Field as 'Brewery Bank'. The Brewery is marked on OS 1857 25" edition, and divided up as two malt houses, a brew house, maltkiln, bonded store and office on the 10' to 1 mile map of 1857. It retains this layout on the 1898 OS map. There has been a brewery on the original Stafford site until modern times. The original building has been demolished. A brewery building does remain on the site, in recent times used as a public house and restaurant, but this was built in the 1930s as a Mineral Water Factory adjoining the much older Monkwearmouth Brewery complex.

The Manor Quay was an extension of J L Thompson's North Sands Yard (SMR 2722). It was opened in 1884 for the fitting out and repair of vessels. The history of the Manor Quay is, as such, parallel with the rest of J L Thompson's Yard. Joseph L Thompson and Sons Ltd was incorporated as a limited liability company in 1894. In 1954 the company became a subsidiary concern for Sunderland Shipbuilding, Dry Docks and Engineering Co. Ltd, which itself became part of the Doxford and Sunderland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in 1861. In 1966, Thompson's was absorbed into Doxfords. On the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map, Manor Quay is not constructed. The area is in residential use, with a row of housing to the south of Wear Street. A gridiron, for graving ships, lies on the riverside beyond the housing, suggesting that some limited ship repair work was already taking place. On the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map, the yard is marked as 'Ship Repairing Works' on the riverside west of ballast House Wharf. Palmers Hill Engine Works lies on an adjacent site to the north-west. Two substantial structures exist within the Manor Quay. Little change on the OS third edition except a few additional small structures in the centre of the yard. On the OS fourth edition map buildings have enclosed the eastern and north-eastern sides of the yard. Travelling cranes run alongside the quayside to the east and west. A large fixed crane sits towards the west of the quay {3}.
