Description
Named as the Direct Ferry Station on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Plan. The Tyne Direct Ferry Company was established in 1847 and operated a service between North Shields New Quay to Kirton's Quay west of Mile End Road in South Shields. This was the most easterly of all the Tyne ferries and had the shortest crossing of the three Shields ferries. The name Kirton's Quay appears on the Second Edition OS plan. When the fare was reduced to one halfpenny the ferry acquired the name of The Ha'penny Dodger. The Halfpenny Ferry Landing was also the home to the floating Seamen's Mission between 1866-1883 (HER 16554). The company operating the Market Place ferry sought to halt the new ferry and amalgagmation soon took place (in 1849) with the older company. The ferryboats were much smaller than the Market Place boats and like the Whitehill Point ferry the Direct Ferry was taken over by the TIC in 1863. It ceased running in August 1954.

Description
The Mission to Seafarers in South Shields dates back to c.1818 when a local branch of the British and Foreign Sailors Society was established. In 1866 a floating Mission was established on the HMS Diamond anchored at the Halfpenny Ferry Landing. This included a chapel and a school for children on the upper deck and a reading room for sailros on the lower. After the timbers of the ship were declared unsound, land was obtained on part of the old bottle works site at Mill Dam in 1883 to build an onshore Mission Church (HER 16553).

Description
The Mission to Seafarers in South Shields dates back to c.1818 when a local branch of the British and Foreign Sailors Society was established. Following the use of a floating Mission Church on the HMS Diamond (HER 16554) a new building was established on the site of the former bottle works at Mill Dam. On October 27th 1884, the foundation stone was laid by Dr Lightfoot, Bishop of Durham. The completed building opened May 25th 1885. The building consisted of two floors, the church being on the first floor and a reading room on the ground floor. An anonymous donor presented the Mission with a commodious steam launch in 1894. This enabled the Mission to extended its operations on the river. The launch always had the Flying Angel hoisted for all to see. In 1921 due to the increasing number of seafarers around Mill Dam the vacant German Sailors' Home was acquired as the new Mission (HER 11976).
