1898 wreck of Danish cargo vessel which stranded 2 miles north of Seaham harbour en route from Randers via Frederikshavn to Newcastle upon Tyne in fog and storm conditions. She was laden with 200 tons of general cargo at the time. Constructed of iron in 1877, she was a steam-driven vessel. Screw steamer of 391 tons gross, insured for half her value of 200,000 kroner. On 31-DEC-1898 at about 10.15pm the NIORD suddenly came up against a bank of fog, in which she ended up among the cliffs between Seaham and Sunderland. The order was given to reverse at full speed, but despite this she remained stuck fast. The vessel was then found to have six feet of water in her hold. Distress flares were then sent up; meanwhile the 2nd mate and one of the seamen offered to go ashore in the ship's boat to seek help. Next morning at 1am the lifeboat arrived to take off the remaining crew. (The date of loss is given as 01-JAN-1899 in this source.)By the next morning, the ship had become a wreck; some of the cargo was recovered, but the crew lost all their belongings. The owners lost 100,000 kroner, since the ship was only insured for half her value. Built: 1877
