Sunderland Borough Hospital for Infectious Diseases was constructed in 1890 to treat diseases such as diphtheria, scarlet fever, meningitis, tuberculosis and dysentery. The hospital was constructed to a design by R.S.Rounthwaite and was renamed the Havelock Hospital in the mid-20th century. Sunderland Borough Hospital was first shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1896. Additional isolation wards (HER 13676) were constructed to the north west of the site between 1896 and 1919.
