06-JUN-1972 Wreck, probably a fishing vessel, lies 340/160 deg with deck just showing above level of surrounding sand. Length about 120ft. Position 54 55 09N 001 21 39W.

21-MAY-1991 Wreck has been removed during work on N dock sea defences.(1) Peter Collings says the Orion lies off Marsden Point near the port hand buoy. The wreckage is well scattered and consists mainly of plates, girders and pieces of twisted metal in which blennies, gobbies and other small fish live {5}.
Steel, 2,164-ton; German registered steamship built in 1901. Her single steel propeller was powered by a three-cylinder, triple-expansion steam engine that used three boilers. On 21 November 1913 (NMR records the date in one of the two entries for Orion as 21st January 1913), the Orion was on passage from Sunderland for Libau with a cargo of coal and a crew of eighteen when she stranded inside the north pier, at the entrance to the river Wear. The crew was taken off by the Volunteer Life Brigade. The vessel stood in the shallow water for some time before she broke in two, becoming a total loss.
Major salvage work was carried out on the Orion soon after she broke up, but part of her top frames lie mixed up with what remnants of the steamship J.B. Eminson and just break the surface on a low spring tide. All that remains of the two wrecks lies about 50m south, and half way along the inside of the north pier on a rather dirty seabed in a general depth of 3m (Spokes suggests a depth of 13m).

Description
1830 wreck of English craft which stranded between Sunderland Pier and Hendon Dean; a wooden sailing vessel. `We have to record the dismal effects of a storm at Sunderland on Wednesday last, almost equal in its consequences to the 14th of October. About 3 o'clock a large fleet of light ships were standing for the harbour, the wind blew stormy at ENE; a considerable number of the first got safe in, but a new storm coming on so intense that it was impossible to distinguish the nearest objects, the following vessels were driven on shore between the harbour and Hendon Dean, the greater part without severe injury though some will be wrecks...MELITA, of Sunderland; BRITANNIA of Whitby...MESSENGER, SOVEREIGN, OAK, CHARLOTTE, ELIZABETH...of Newcastle; LOUISA of Aberdeen; WILLIAM AND BETSEY, of Peterhead. The crews escaped with difficulty, by the assistance of the life boats and cobles.' (1)
