Description
In 1890 Tynemouth Council leased a plot of 7 acres from the Duke of Northumberland. A new recreation ground was opened here in 1893 with a large pond, three bowling greens, ornamental gardens and a bandstand. In 1930 a large pavilion and tennis courts were added on more land leased from the Duke. On the opening of the park, the Tynemouth Model Yacht Club was formed and a boathouse built for the group. Rowing boats were introduced in 1908 to their dismay. The Duke of Northumberland's agent forced the council to set aside longer hours when the club would have exclusive use of the lake. LOCAL LIST

Village Green
SITEDESC
This area is labelled as 'The Green' on Ordnance Survey first edition map. It would have been at the heart of the medieval village (HER 137) on the main thoroughfare. Wild (2004) suggests that the characteristic green villages of Northumberland date back to the reconstruction of settlement in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest and the 'harrying of the north'. The greens originally had a defensive function to protect livestock against Scottish raiders. The wide open space in the centre of the village could also be used for fairs, markets, for grazing animals and a meeting space (Rowley and Wood, 2000, 41). Dwellings were often built around the green, with a common forge, bakehouse, pinfold, smithy, alehouse, stocks, spring or pond on the green itself (Roberts 1977, 146). The green has changed shape since the nineteenth century (it is semi-circular on OS second edition). It is now a rectangular plot with a World War One memorial (HER 7333) in the centre and a South African war memorial (HER 7332) and statue of Queen Victoria (HER 7334) at either end. Refurbishment works to the green were finished in April 2003 - the tarmac was replaced with gravel, concrete slabs in front of Queen Victoria replaced with York stone and granite setts, six new trees were planted. Replica railings based on photographs of the original, were reinstated around Queen Victoria and the stone plinth and steps were repaired.

West End Park was laid out by Ordnance Survey fourth edition circa 1940 along with recreation grounds. The park includes a war memorial. This was formerly the grounds of Chirton Dene House. West End Park is linked to the modern Smith's Park, created in 1994 by SGS Environment for the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation as part of the Royal Quays shopping outlet. To the south of Howdon Road, accessed by a pedestrian subway is the Linear Park, with formal circular footpaths laid out either side of the Chirton Burn. Chirton and Redburn Dene Parks are on North Tyneside Council's Local List. Redburn Dene used to be one of the main rail corridors down to coal staiths on the River Tyne. Timbers from the former staiths have been reused to form carved columns. A series of large boulders form an artwork called "Rugged Landscape". Chirton Dene was infilled when the Albert Edward Dock was built in the 1880s. The theme of this 12 acre park is water, with representations of a mountain stream, reed beds, central pool, a cadadar, a boggy area and then a series of cascades into Albert Edward Dock.

Description
This 15 acre lake was created circa 1964 during the reclamation of derelict pit sites. The surrounding park was meant to be like a natural meadow, with spoil heaps levelled and planted with semi-mature trees. Killingworth Township was supposed to represent a modern version of a castle set in a parkland landscape and approached by a causeway over a lake, like a drawbridge over a moat. The lake attracts swans, ducks and other wildlife and is well stocked with fish. An angling club and model boating club use the lake regularly. The lake is about 1.5 feet deep at the edge, sloping down to a maximum of 6.4 feet deep at the centre. LOCAL LIST

In 2019 during an archaeological watching brief deposits associated with the construction of the lake and parkland at Killingworth Town Park were encountered. In addition a linear deposit of clinker, brick fragments and coal on a NW/SE alignment was encountered. This was interpreted as part of a haulage road related to the creation of the parkland and lake in the 1960s.

This war memorial was listed Grade II in 2013 with the following description:
History
This war memorial was erected by public subscription at a cost of £980 on a site donated by Seaton Burn Coal Company. It was made by Emley & Sons of Newcastle upon Tyne, stonemasons who were also responsible for two monuments in Sunderland (Grade II listed) and for the design of the reredos and font in the Church of St George, Newcastle (Grade I listed) The war memorial was unveiled on 8th July 1922 by R. S. Barrett, agent to Seaton Burn Coal Company, and was dedicated by the Rev. J.H. Mawson. The iron railings surrounding the memorial were refurbished in 2012 by local volunteers.
Details
MATERIALS: red and grey granite
PLAN: the memorial in the form of a mausoleum is set within a wrought iron enclosure, itself set within a roadside embayment formed by a stone wall with pillars at intervals. A three-stepped square base and castellated plinth supports a tall square pedestal with short curvilinear clasping buttresses and engaged columns at the corners; the latter rise above the entablature as decorative finials. The top of the pedestal is surmounted by a domed column bearing a stone Celtic cross. Pink granite panels on the front sides of the column bear the 72 names of the Fallen of both World Wars. Lettering is incised and gilded using sans serif capitols throughout. The inscription on the front face reads:
In memory of the men / of Seaton Burn / and District / who fell / in the Great War / 1914-18 /
