Description
Westoe Farm first depicted on the tithe plan of 1841. Also known as South Farm and Colley's Farm. Not shown on Richardson's plan of 1769. First owner was probably George Marshall, then let to John and William Moor and then John Lamb after Marshalls death. Farm supposedly had a duck pond in front of the house and that the lane by the side of the farm was closed to traffic. The size of the farm c.1866 was c.45acres. This gradually decreased as the residential area grew.First labelled on 1897 OS plan. Demolished July 1952, the last of the nine farms of Westoe. South Tyneside College built on the site.

The Big Lamp used to light the junction to Westgate Road and Elswick Road. Its column stood in the middle of Elswick Road where it joins Westgate Road, opposite the Bay Horse pub and the end of Summerhill Street. It was erected before 1900. Although it has been gone for many years it was such a landmark that this spot is still called 'the big lamp', and a small brewery with its offices there has called itself 'The Big Lamp Brewery'.

Description
In 1992 some medieval ploughsoils were recorded on the site of the Pavilion Theatre. Beneath the ploughsoils, ridge and furrow plough marks were discovered. It has been claimed that these are early medieval in date (Tyne and Wear Museums 1992, 9). No dating evidence was supplied for these soils, but a second evaluation trench cut over the same area revealed a deposit of gravels over the natural subsoil into which a ditch had been dug. The excavators thought that this ditch was associated with agriculture. The ditch was sealed by several phases of occupation, the earliest represented by ploughsoils containing early 12th century pottery. Three pits had been cut into this, and contained pottery from the early 12th century to the mid 14th century. These were interpreted as latrines. The earliest ditch and ploughsoils have, consequently been dated to the late Saxon or early Norman period.
