Description
The First Edition Ordnance Survey plan 1862 shows a building labelled The Main Engine at Waggon Hill. On the 1775 plan there is a coal shaft, surrounding spoil and adjoining building, probably a pumping engine are shown here. A track, with sidings beside the pit ran north to the spout on the Lambton riverbank and probably transported coal from the colliery. Pit may have closed by 1815 - the engine perhaps still functioned to drain the colliery. Perhaps represents Wharton Main Colliery hence the name, the Main Engine, on the 1862 OS plan.

Description
The Londonderry Railway from Painshaw Foundry (HER ref. 3110) to coal staiths on the Wear (HER ref. 3084) opened in 1831 and, like the Hetton Railway, breasted Warden Law on its way to its destination. The whole of the line from Rainton to Seaham was closed in November 1896. The remains of the former engine house (HER ref. 2977) survive at Warden Law. The Londonderry line is interesting for the history of its development and as the only line built to run to the sea. Its origins lay in the problems the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry was experiencing in not only getting his coal to the Wear but also in the punative duties levied by the river authorities, as a result of which Londonderry developed his own port at Seaham and constructed a rope hauled inclined railway to carry his coals there.

Remains of the rail side ditches and rail bed material from the Londonderry Railway were recorded in a 2017 excavation (ASUD). A ditch lay at the centre of the line of the railway shown on historic maps and may reflect an easement ditch marking the proposed line of the railway prior to its construction. A sandstone culvert was also recorded.
