The 2nd edition OS mapping shows these works had expanded by 1895 and had been renamed the St. Bede Works. The site is also known as the Don Factory, this site was shown on a map of 1839. Thomas Bell founded the Don Alkali Works in 1836. Jefferson and Co. started the Bede Chemical Works. The Hebburn (HER 2503) and Jarrow Works shared in the development of the South Durham (Haverton Hill) salt deposits and in the formation of a local factory to work the copper in the pyrites used in making sulphuric acid - the Tharsis Copper Company.

Description
Historic Ordnance Survey Map evidence shows the location of a Smithy in Hedworth.
SITEASS
The smithy or forge was the workplace of a blacksmith or ironsmith, where iron was worked into useful objects such as weapons, armour in the Middle Ages and locks, hinges, spades and tools, iron horseshoes (machine-made horseshoes were introduced from USA in 1870s), grilles, gates, railings, metal parts for locomotives, coaches, waggons and carts. The blacksmith's raw material was wrought iron in bar form. The smithy comprised a hearth, bellows, anvil and bosh (quenching trough). A small forge had hand-operated bellows, a large industrial forge water-powered bellows, power hammer and shears (William Jones, 1996, Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology).

Description
A paper mill occupied this site from 1856 to 1916. In 1856 this included a gasometer and chimney and two settling ponds (HER ref. 2552). A large fire took place in 1875 and the plant was rebuilt by 1897. At this time the settling ponds were relocated and a well replaced the original holding tank. The site is marked as Springwell Paper Mills on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey plan, and may have been associated with the nearby Filter Beds (HER ref. 2553). The original paper manufacturers ceased production in 1912. By 1916 the gasometer had been removed and an office block had been added. Many of the larger buildings were demolished in 1949, and the rest were demolished in 1998.
SITEASS
Site redeveloped for housing. Paper manufacture began in Britain in the late C15. It was made by hand at first, from torn-up linen or cotton rags beaten up in water to a pulp. The pulp was sometimes boiled in caustic soda to remove impurities, and sometimes bleached to make fine quality white paper. The pulp was made into paper, a sheet at a time, in a mould made of fine copper wires. The wet paper sheets were then squeezed under a screw press to remove excess water, then hung on ropes in a drying loft. If intended for printing, the sheets were dipped in a gelatine size then dried again. In around 1650 the Hollander roller beater was invented. In the 1820s resin and alum were added at beating stage instead of the separate gelatine size and second drying stage. In the early C19 wood fibres began to replace old rags. Wood pulp and waste paper became the raw materials. Esparto grass from Spain and North Africa was introduced c.1860. Making paper in a continuous length began with the fourbrinier machine in 1807. This was imrpoved in 1820 by a steam drying section patented by Thomas Bonsor Crompton. By about 1830 half the paper made in Britain was made by machine. By 1860 95% was machine made. A typical 1860s paper mill would comprise reservoirs and filter beds for controlling the quality of the water, a rag store, sorting room, rope chopper, dusting house, Hollander beating house, boiling kiers, bleach house, paper making machines, paper cutting machines, glazing house, warehouse, boiler house and a copious water supply usually from a river (William Jones, 1996, Dictionary of Industrial Archaeology).

Marked as Springwell Paper Mills on the second edition OS mapping this may have been associated with the nearby Filter Beds (SMR 2553) {1}. A paper mill occupied this site from 1856 to 1916. By 1916 the gasometer had been removed and an office block had been added. From 1916 to 1974 the mill buildings were used as an activity centre for the unemployed, a dance hall, a furniture manufacturing plant and latterly as storage workshops for an engineering contractor. Many of the larger buildings were demolished in 1949 and there were many extensions added. Buildings photographed in 1998 prior to demolition {2}.
