Construction took from 1854-1895, numerous problems were encountered and the works overseen by various engineers, including W. A. Brookes, J. F. Ure and P. J. Messant. It was badly damaged and breached in 1897 and rebuilding was not finished until 1910. A painted rendered ashlar lighthouse with a glass lantern stands at the end of the pier (HER 7347). The construction is of two parallel walls, connected by cross walls, filled with quarry debris and, further out to sea, concrete. It stands on a rubble foundation, up to 27ft below low water level. The seaward end was originally curved but after being breached it was rebuilt straight, allowing the work to be done in the lee of the earlier structure. The new section was 1500ft long. The pier is 2900ft long with a gap of 1180ft to the South pier. Extents not fully shown on 1st edn OS Mapping. {1} Pier. 1854-1895; partly rebuilt in 1909. Engineers W. A. Brookes to 1858, J. F. Ure from 1858, and P. J. Messent from 1862, for Tyne Improvement Commissioners. Rock-faced stone pier and north shelter wall, iron crane. The crane now demolished was not of special interest. {3}

Description
Low Dock, North Shields is the only protected Graving Dock on the Tyne and possibly the oldest surviving one on the river in anything like an original form. It measures 65 metres x 20 metres and is of stone construction with stepped sides and a rounded western end. Over much of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, the dock lay at the centre of a small repair yard. No details of the history of this yard have been established. It appears on Wood’s plan of 1827 between King David’s Quay (to the north) and Broad Quay (to the south). The dock lies within an area of modern residential development. No features associated with its function survive. LISTED GRADE 2
SITEASS
The dock lies within an area of modern residential development which runs around both of its flanks. The residential development is gated and there is no public access around the dock. No features associated with the function of the dock survive. The entrance gate to the dock has been removed {2}.

Low Dock, North Shields. The only protected Graving Dock on the Tyne and possibly the oldest surviving one on the river. Measures 65m x 20m {1}. The only protected graving dock on the Tyne and possibly the oldest surviving on the river in anything like an original form. The dock is of stone construction with stepped sides and a rounded western end. It is 65m long by 20m wide. Over much of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, the dock lay at the centre of a small repair yard. The dock once belonged to the Shields Dry Dock and Engineering Co. Ltd. It became known as 'The Haddock Shop' because it specialised in the building and repair of steam trawlers. The 'Lolist', a fishing boat built in Middlesbrough in 1914 and registered in Lowestoft, fished out of North Shields for many years and was repaired in Low Dock. The training ship 'Satellite' was moored just off the dock. In 1954 Low Dock was incorporated into Smith's Dock Co. Since the development of Dolphin Quays the dock has become a basin for leisure craft.
Map Evidence:
J Wood, Plan of the Towns of North Shields and Tynemouth 1826-7
The dock lies between King David’s Quay (to the north) and Broad Quay (to the south), within an open area, presumably representing an associated yard.
First Edition Six Inches to One Mile Ordnance Survey, Sheet 89
A building sits against the dock’s northern flank, with an open area to its south. Extent of associated yard uncertain.
Second Edition Twenty Five Inches to One Mile Ordnance Survey, Sheet 3 (Tyneside)
Dock lies within a discrete open area amongst buildings. Area associated with dock uncertain.
Fourth Edition Twenty Five Inches to One Mile Ordnance Survey, Sheet 95.1
The dock lies within what appears to be a discrete yard with railway track running from the east of the yard to the dock and then alongside it. A number of structures lie within the yard {2}.
