Cemetery
SITEDESC
In 1857 the North Shields congregation advised for donations for buying a plot for a cemetery (Beth Chaim in Hebrew). Donations were received from the Chief Rabbi, the Duke of Northumberland, Lindsay MP, Hugh Taiken, Captain Linskill, Liddell MP and WB Beaumont. A plot was purchased within a field on the Balkwell Farm estate. In 1907 the burial ground was disused. The wall was broken in many places. The land was later sold to Tynemouth Corporation for development. In 1924 the cemetery was moved and reinterred in Preston Road Cemetery on the advice of the London Beth Din. A newspaper article dated 1924 stated that 17 people were buried in the graveyard but there were only two tombstones. The graveyard measured 20 square feet. One gravestone was over the grave of Hart Samuel (died 1806 aged 77) and his wife Rachael (aged 74, year of death illegible). A special service was conducted by Rev. E Drukker of Newcastle, before the disinterment. By 1924 there were only around 6 Jewish families in North Shields. Most families had by then joined the South Shields congregation.
