On her passage in ballast, she was a wooden sailing vessel. `Lynn, Dec.3: Information has just been received from Sunderland, which announces that the shipping had suffered severely upon that coast during the last week, in consequence of a tremendous gale. We are sorry to add that amongst the number was a vessel called the MERCURY, belonging to Lynn, the property of Messrs. Everard and Blencowe. It appears the vessel was driven upon the rocks, where she became a total wreck. The crew were rescued by the lifeboat.' (Norwich Mercury) Owner: Messrs. Everard and Blencowe

SITEDESC
1799 wreck of an English craft which stranded south of Sunderland during a storm; a wooden sailing vessel.`In early April 1799 a fierce storm raged in the North Sea and the colliers on passage along the East Coast suffered many casualties, both in terms of ships and men. Within the three days before the storm over 200 vessels had departed from Shields and Sunderland, most of which had to face the full power of wind and sea. Soon reports were coming in of ships being driven ashore, often with fatal consequences.

`...To the south of Sunderland the storm had claimed more casualties...lastly a Sunderland ship was wrecked, whose name is also unclear, from which at least several men were saved...' (Keys and Smith)
