The Charity-School of St John's for 44 poor boys, was endowed by Mr John Ord in 1705. He gave with it a large piece of land outside the Pilgrim Gate, called Great Magdalen Close, alias the Mill-Close, which was held by Lease of the Master and Brethren of St Mary Magdalen Hospital, under the Rent of 4l per annum. The Close was let at 25l.

Description
During Grainger's excavations in 1834, to create the new Grainger Market, the workmen found an ancient cast of a crucifix, the remains of a gilt spur, a farthing of William III and two other small coins. In March 1835 a fragent of blue marble tombstone was found, with a Lombardic inscription round the edge and an incised shaft of a cross in the centre. Presumably finds deriving from St Bartholomew's Nunnery and cemetery (HER 1431 and 1432).

Four 18th century glass bottles were found during excavations on the west side of Gallowgate near Corporation Road, by a Mr J.H. Little. One still contained some of the malt liquor they were originally filled with. Three of the bottles were 7.75 inches high and 5 inches wide at the base. The fourth was 9 inches high and 4 inches wide at the base.
