A carved stone creeing trough with four small human heads at each corner, was found beside the shaft of an old well during demolitions at the back of No. 43 Groat Market.

A carved oak bracket bearing the date 1609 was found in the Crown and Thistle yard in the Groat Market and reported to the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1889.

The Charity-School of St John's for 44 poor boys, was endowed by Mr John Ord in 1705. He gave with it a large piece of land outside the Pilgrim Gate, called Great Magdalen Close, alias the Mill-Close, which was held by Lease of the Master and Brethren of St Mary Magdalen Hospital, under the Rent of 4l per annum. The Close was let at 25l.

During Grainger's excavations in 1834, to create the new Grainger Market, the workmen found an ancient cast of a crucifix, the remains of a gilt spur, a farthing of William III and two other small coins. In March 1835 a fragment of blue marble tombstone was found, with a Lombardic inscription round the edge and an incised shaft of a cross in the centre. Presumably finds deriving from St Bartholomew's Nunnery and cemetery (HER 1431 and 1432).

Four 18th century glass bottles were found during excavations on the west side of Gallowgate near Corporation Road, by a Mr J.H. Little. One still contained some of the malt liquor they were originally filled with. Three of the bottles were 7.75 inches high and 5 inches wide at the base. The fourth was 9 inches high and 4 inches wide at the base.

A late 18th century delft dish with a colourful design was found in the town wall ditch at Gallowgate. It was donated to the Society of Antiquaries by Mr. S Holmes in 1897.

In 1895, iron fetters (shackles for the feet), very much corroded, consisting of two hinged rings with a connecting chain, were found on the north side of St Andrew's Church (HER 1486) near the vestry door. Donated to the Society of Antiquaries by Rev. J.M Lister of St Andrew's. Do these derive from Newgate Gaol (HER 1543)?

Roman coins from Carliol Tower were donated to the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1922.

The Common Gutter formed a boundary between houses fronting onto Westgate and houses fronting onto Iron Market south of Denton Chare. Was it the Esley Burn? Bourne and Welford mentions a waste in St John's Chare or Rosemary Lane, which belonged to the nuns of St Bartholomew (HER 1431-2), which was bordered on the west by the Common Gutter and on the north by the chantery lands. Date of document 1577. Dated C16th.

A cast iron cannon ball was retrieved from the outer face of the town wall 40ft north of the site of Close Gate in 1983. It weighed 13 lbs, and was 15.75 inches in circumference. It would fit a bore of 5 inches.
