Wall originally enclosing yard of the infirmary (now St. Mary's Builiding of the Sunderland Polytechnic (qv)). 1822 with 20th century alterations. Rubble limestone with roughly rounded coping; brick blocking to doorway. High wall formerly enclosing yard to infirmary continues from S, along W and part of N boundary. Brick blocking to former door on W; small hatches have wood doors and were probably formerly for delivery of coal. Central section altered slightly, probably when Edinburgh Building of Polytechnic, to S was constructed c1960 (not listed). Included for group value. LISTED GRADE 2

Description
This coal staithe of 19th century construction, with later alterations, comprises brick piers and platform facings. Formerly wood superstructure on the platform supported railway lines from which coal waggons could tip coal directly into the holds of ships. This is the last surviving coal staithe on the Wear, where once each bank was lined by staithes. The steel structure and conveyor attached to the brick piers were removed in circa 1994 due to potential safety problems. LISTED GRADE 2

House, now used by Sunderland University, with steps and railings to door, and yard walls. C1855. Garden wall bond brick (5 and one) with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. Stone steps and cast - iron railings on S side. Brick walls and piers with ashlar coping. EXTERIOR: S and left return elevations have basement and 2 storeys; 4 windows. S elevation: steps up to 3 - panel door in third bay, with plain overlight, in doorcase of engaged, fluted quasi - Corinthian octagonal columns and dentil cornice to entablature which breaks forward above columns. Basement has banded rustication and sashes with glazing bars. Other sashes, tripartite on ground floor left return, have stone sills and architraves each with frieze and cornice. Hipped roof of moderate pitch has 20th century dormer. Right return has set - back 20th century addition. High ashlar - coped walls break forward from right to enclose yard, and have square brick piers of same height at corners and forming central entrance to Park Road and side vehicle entrance on right return of yard. Originally part of St. George's Place, a square which was damaged in WWII. (Milburn GE and Miller ST: Sunderland River, Town and People: Sunderland: 1988-: 61, 64). LISTED GRADE 2

Garden wall bond brick with painted ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings and brick chimneys; stone steps and cast - iron handrails. A convex crescent. 2 storeys and basement, each house 3 windows; set - back right wing to No. 1 at right with entrance porch. 6 wide stone steps to 6 - panel doors of Sunderland type, folding back to form panelled reveals to inner doors, in pilaster - and - entablature surrounds, at right of Nos. 2 - 14, central to No. 15 and in set - back porch to No. 1; most inner doors half - glazed with overlights; all windows 4 - pane sashes with architraves and bracketed sills. No. 15 at left is wider and has ground floor canted bay windows with fruit and flower carving on brackets to cornices; first floor band below tripartite windows and altered central window with stained glass. No. 1 has narrow Venetian window on first floor flanked by narrow blocked windows; sun - blind casings to ground floor windows. Roof has transverse - ridge corniced chimneys; some hipped dormers; elliptical - headed scroll - sided dormer to No. 14; prominent inserted roof lights to No. 13; altered dormers to Nos. 9, 10 and 12. Right return of No. 1 has angle pilasters.
