Site Type: Broad
Sailing Vessel <By Form/Type>
SITEDESC
1829 wreck of English sloop which foundered immediately off Sunderland while trying to make for the harbour in a gale; a wooden sailing vessel, thought to have been in ballast. `On Tuesday night a dreadful storm arose at NE, and several light ships having come to anchor in Sunderland Roads (the greater part of which had cast their ballast) they were consequently placed in the most dangerous situation. In the morning of Wednesday the gale increased and several of the vessels, unable to ride out the storm, even after cutting away their masts, drove on shore either on the rocks near the harbour, or on the sands near Hendon. Therefore before 3 o'clock in the afternoon, the shore presented the melancholy spectacle of 13 stranded vessels - some went to pieces immediately...Happily, up to this period no lives were lost...About 4 o'clock, however, a sloop (the ELEANOR, of Sunderland) appeared making for the harbour; but it was too evident, to the thousands of spectators who lined the beach, that she could never reach her destination; and when she was within 400 yards of the shore she was struck with a heavy sea, and her mast went by the side. The unfortunate crew, four in number, were seen struggling with the waves, but their efforts were unavailing, and they soon disappeared for ever. The beach is covered with wreck and wrecked materials...FRIENDS, BLAGDON, CALEDONIA, SYREN, JAMES, IRIS, of Harwich, ELEANOR, PHOENIX, MARGARET, of Sunderland, and ADRIATIC of Shields, gone to pieces...' {Durham County Advertiser}.
