1791 wreck of English sloop which sprung a leak and foundered off Sunderland on her departure, laden with coal; a wooden sailing vessel. `Newcastle, March 19, 1791...Tuesday the sloop BETSEY, Bedlington, of Whitby, sailed from Sunderland, and had not been out above an hour, when she sprung a leak, and almost instantly sunk in the Road. The crew with great difficulty saved their lives' {Newcastle Courant}.

1818 wreck of Scottish cargo vessel which foundered off Sunderland en route from London to Sunderland and/or Banff. Laden with timber, she was a wooden sailing vessel. `On the night of the 24th ult. about 10 o'clock, the ACHILLES, of South Shields, bound from Newcastle to London, coal laden, wind SSW, was run on board of by the BEAVER, of Banff, laden with timber for Sunderland. The BEAVER had a free wind, but by the crew not keeping a good look-out, and the ACHILLES' people not being able to make them hear (after repeated hailing) the ships came in contact, and the BEAVER sunk. The crew were saved, and have come in the ACHILLES to Shields, where she has arrived to repair damage' {Durham County Advertiser}. Master: Lyle

Bound for Delfziel and Groningen with coal, she was a wooden sailing vessel. `The Dutch vessel VROW ANNEGINA, Postema, master, loaden with coals, etc., sailed from Sunderland on Sunday evening, on her intended voyage to Delfziel; she had not been long out of the harbour before she was met by the NESTOR, Atcheson master, when, owing to some mismanagement, the vessels came in contact, and the Dutch vessel sustained so much damage, that she immediately went down. Crew saved. The top of her masts may be seen at low water off Hendon' {Durham County Advertiser}.

1753 wreck of English brig which stranded near the North Battery, Sunderland, after a collision on entering Sunderland harbour; a wooden sailing vessel. `Newcastle, Feb. 24. Last Saturday, as the BRIGANTINE, Slightman, of Scarborough, was making her way into Sunderland harbour with the morning tide, she was run down near the pier by the THREE SISTERS, Niesham. There were two masters of ships on board, who, together with the crew (after a narrow escape with their lives) were taken up by Mr Neisham's [sic] ship. The brig floated again, and was drove on shore on the north side of the North Battery that tide, where she lay on a good sand, but a great sea happening on Monday night, she was drove to pieces on Tuesday morning' {Newcastle Courant}. ENGLISH SCHOONER, 1852. This schooner was run into by a foreign schooner at 2pm in wind conditins E force 9 and stormy, whilst entering Sunderland Harbour. She was forced to turn round, and then drove on the North Sand and sank, her bottom having been pricked by an old anchor. Several of her stanchions were broken, and some of her shrouds were carried away, so that she was much strained and became a total loss. The colliding vessel was the PHILOMEL, which lost only her jib-boom {Larn}. Master: Robert Suffling Owner: William Brown
