This day, the wind blowing dead upon the coast, and the sea extremely rough, three light vessels came on shore, viz. the WALPOLE of Bridlington, PATRIOT...JAMES & MARY...the latter behind the North Pier, and the two former about a mile to the south. 1796 wreck of English cargo vessel which stranded a mile north of Sunderland, on her departure with a cargo of lime; a wooden sailing vessel. `Newcastle, April 2...The BETSEY...struck on the Bar, in going out, on the 26th ult...In the same gale, the MAY-FLOWER, of and from Sunderland, loaded with lime, was forced on shore about a mile to the northward; the crew saved, but the vessel and cargo entirely lost.' {Newcastle Courant 02-APR-1796, No.6234, Page 4}.

CRICKLADE sunk as blockship. Blockships sunk outside southern entrance to port of Sunderland and within the breakwater on either side of the north entrance. These wrecks are being removed.
