1824 wreck of English brig which stranded a mile south of Sunderland during a gale, while on her passage in ballast; a wooden sailing vessel. `Sunderland, 2d April. This day, the wind blowing dead upon the coast, and the sea extremely rough, three light vessels came on shore, viz. the WALPOLE of Bridlington, PATRIOT...JAMES & MARY...the latter behind the North Pier, and the two former about a mile to the south. Crews saved.' {Lloyd's 1969 Lloyd's list 06-APR-1824, No.5896}. `During the gale on the 2d inst. the brigs PATRIOT...and the WALPOLE, of Bridlington, both in ballast, were driven on shore to the southward of Sunderland; the former is expected to be got off, but the latter has been sold as a wreck.' {Newcastle Courant 10-APR-1824, No.7696 Page 4}.
