1825 wreck of English smack which stranded behind one of the piers at Sunderland (variously described as the North or South Pier) during a gale. En route from London to Sunderland with a general cargo, she was a wooden sailing vessel. 'On Tuesday morning last, during a heavy sea, and a light wind from the west, the smack SWIFT, general trader between London and Sunderland, and laden with a valuable cargo, was driven behind the South Pier at Sunderland, and has since gone to pieces. The cargo was all got out, although very much damaged. The greatest praise is due to Lieut.-Colonel Austin, the officers, and privates of the 97th Regiment in Sunderland Barracks, for the zeal displayed by them in securing the cargo of the SWIFT, which we hear was valued at £10,000...' {Durham County Advertiser 03-DEC-1825, No.587 Page 3}.
