SITEDESC
1806 wreck of English sloop which was burnt in the River Wear "above the bridge" after taking in her cargo of lime, which caught fire; a wooden sailing vessel.
`Sunday morning last, a sloop, the EARL OF ELGIN, Alexander Liddle, of Charlestown, lime loaden, took fire in the River Wear, a little above the bridge, and notwithstanding great exertion was made by Mr Baker, with whom she had loaded, to save the vessel, she now lies a complete wreck. The poor fellow who is both captain and owner, having only her profits to support a very large family, will be almost ruined by this misfortune. Accidents of this kind are numerous, and as no insurance by policy can be effected for ships in this trade, without an enormous premium, it is to be regretted that the ship owners in it do not see the mutual good that would attend a friendly policy being opened to ensure each other, as in the coal trade.'
