Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. Rebuilt in 1929. John Lee, the 'Man they Couldn't Hang' worked here. He was sentenced to death in 1884 for murdering his rich female employer. However the hangman failed three times to excute him and so his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment. He actually served 20 years, then tried running a shop, then became a barman. Closed in 1971. Demolished for Eldon Square Shopping Centre (HER 9787).

The premises were bought by Arrol's in 1896 and it was altered by 1914. The Phoenix closed in 1953. A branch of Lloyds Bank was built on this site but this was demolished to make way for Eldon Square Shopping Centre.

Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. Became a Robert Deuchar house in 1897. It included a grill room, two commodious bars, a snug, four sitting rooms and an office. It's Newgate Street façade was 40 feet long and that on High Friar Street was double that size. In 1937 the magistrates refused to renew its licence because the building was structurally deficient and because there were another 28 pubs within 300 yards.
