Until the mid C19 this was the meeting place of the Newcastle Lodge of the Free and Easy Johns. This society formed in 1768 describing themselves as a 'convivial society with a ritual, password and grip'. W.B. Reid bought the Blue Posts. It closed in 1931.

Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. Now under a re-routed Melbourne Street. Bought by Steel Coulson in 1907. Was one of 16 public houses secured by Vaux when they absorbed the Edinburgh firm in 1959. Closed in 1968. Its licence was used to open the Man in the Moon in Princess Square. When the Royal Victoria was demolished, the red granite façade was salvaged and used for six polished name plates for John Dobson Street.
