SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. Built around 1880. It was a storey higher at the back than at the front. Its foundations rested on ships' ballast. Known as 'Jocker Wood's' after John Wood, a sportsmen who moved from the Masons Arms on Quality Row in 1900. He laid out a quoits pitch. There was a fire in 1920. The bar, select room, bagatelle room and two bedrooms were destroyed. John Wood's son took over in 1937. The pub closed in 1952. Local tradition tells that after the pub's closure a man dug up of the quoit stakes to take home but he was struck by a car and killed. No one has attempted to remove the last remaining stake which still stands on the plot.
