Eating and Drinking Establishment
SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. Until the late 1960s the block between Neville Street, Grainger Street and Westgate Road was a popular place for drinkers, having four pubs. The Douglas opened in 1877. It was a 50 bedroom hotel acquired by Newcastle Breweries from Robert Deuchar in 1899. The Douglas had a splendid Victorian buffet, fitted out around 1886. "There is nothing finer of the kind to be seen anywhere in England outside of London, and we doubt much if even in the Metropolis itself there could be named a buffet of more beautiful design, decoration and appointment. The floor is laid with richly-wrought tiles specially made for the buffet in Germany; and the ceiling is embellished in a singularly effective manner with beautifully hand-painted canvas, stretched on woodwork and covered with glass. The wood-work of the entire buffet is in solid American walnut, handsomely-carved, and the counter is enriched with decorations in the same style as the ceiling. Behind the bar, instead of the ordinary shelves and glasses, there is a noble structure in the form of a mantelpiece, all in solid walnut, and this is also enriched with the decorative hand-painted panels. The windows are of stained glass, and the walls are hung with a number of fine paintings by noted artists, the value of these artworks alone being upwards of £1,100". The Douglas closed in 1968 and was replaced by the 1970s Baron House.

Inn
SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. In the 1850s the Spital Inn (later Hotel) was selling off utensils from its 26 half-barrel brewery. The inn was acquired by Newcastle Breweries in 1899 and demolished in 1971. It was described as 'like a Victorian gin palace with women brawling on the floor, prostitutes letting all and sundry know they were available and drunken men being carried out and deposited in the unfriendly world outside'. The Spital was renowned for its rough and ready clientele.
