Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. The Alexandra in Clayton Street West was opened as a temperance hotel by Alderman Thomas Grey. In the late 1880s James Deuchar leased the then licensed Alexandra. In 1892 the hotel was reconstructed for £8000 and became the Metropole Hotel. Newcastle United's directors met here every Thursday to select the team. The Metropole closed in 1920 and became the Newcastle Farmers' Club.

Acquired by Westgate Hill Brewery in 1897. Bought by John Rowell, Gateshead brewer, in 1917. It closed in 1960. It became a Jewish social club later an Indian restaurant.

Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. William Cole ran a brewery here from the mid 1840s until 1866. John Cole was licensee of the public house. John Sutter took over the pub and brewery. He became the sole agent in Newcastle for Carmichael's, Edinburgh pale ale brewers. The Elephant and Castle was a favourite of the miners who held their union meetings there. Sutter retired in 1891. His properties were acquired by Richard Charlton. The pub closed in 1935.
