SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. In the 1870s James Robinson, wine merchant, had purchased the White Swan (HER 10345). He then purchased the adjacent Nag's Head for use as his importing, bonding, blending and exporting business. By the twentieth century, Nos. 32-34 Cloth Market was a complex of offices, stores, blending and bottling rooms. James Robinson & Sons was taken over by Isaac Tucker, Gateshead brewer, and then by Whitbreads in 1968. The wine and spirit warehouse was closed but the wine cellar was retained. In 1975 the famous 'no unaccompanied ladies' sign was taken down. In 1979 the cellar was closed and the buildings demolished. The new development included a bar called Robinsons (later the Town House).

SITEDESC
Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. The premises are thought to date back to 1623 and became Newcastle's first post office. Sir William Brereton lodged hear in 1635 and described the landlord and postmaster George Swan as "a very forward man to have a coy erected" (this is the wooden swan which hung outside as an inn sign). George Swan was a royalist and took a major part in defending the town in 1644. His son Thomas was one of three people who held the Pilgrim Street Gate after the rest of Newcastle had fallen. After Cromwell's victory, a keen roundhead became postmaster but by 1670 with Charles II back on the throne, Thomas Swan was made postmaster. John Morrow brewed here in the early 1860s. Around 1870 Robinson's wine merchants took over the property. They later also acquired the Nag's Head next door (HER 10347). The buildings became offices, stores, blending and bottling rooms and licensed premises. Robinson's was taken over by Isaac Tucker, a Gateshead brewer. In 1968 Whitbread's took over. They closed the warehouse but retained the 'sawdust-floored wine cellar'. In 1979 the building was demolished. In 1981 a new public house called Robinson's was built on the site. In 1996 this was called the Town House. In 2012 it is called Bar 24.

Shown on Ordnance Survey second edition. A single bar pub on the same pattern as the neighbouring White Hart and Old Durham House. The façade dates to a 1909 modernisation (the date is above the ground floor window). Inside a few cornice details remain. Offered for sale in 1857 with an old brewery. In 1856 a local newspaper advertised brewery utensils for sale in Heywood's Court, including a copper pan, a copper, gyles etc, all in first rate condition. The Alnwick House was rebuilt in 1909 and became the Imperial Hotel, now the Bass-owned Bewicks wine bar. An old blue 'Heywood's Court' street sign is still fixed to the side wall in the alleyway. It's now [2013] called 'Kiss'.

The public house was rebuilt in the late C19 as the Midland Tavern (later Midland Hotel) and was bought by Richard Charlton in 1906. The Midland was in the 1950s an unofficial employment exchange for mariners looking for work. It was a Reid's pub, later Newcastle Breweries. In the 1980s it became Berlin's Cocktail Bar. It has since been called Rikk's, Jakks, Po-Na-Na and latterly Tokyo.
